There’s so much to love about hawksbills:
- Reef gardeners – They’re the ocean’s landscapers, munching on sponges and keeping coral reefs healthy and balanced
- That iconic beak – Their sharp, hawk-like beak isn’t just for looks – it’s perfectly designed for reaching into tight coral crevices for food
- Shell goals – Each hawksbill has a unique shell pattern, like underwater fingerprints. No two are exactly alike!
- Ancient mariners – These incredible creatures have been cruising our oceans for over 100 million years. They’re literally living dinosaurs!
- Critically endangered – Sadly, hawksbills are much rarer than green turtles, making every encounter extra special
Here in Nusa Penida’s marine protected area, we’re incredibly fortunate to regularly spot these beautiful turtles. When you see one gracefully gliding through the reef, remember you’re witnessing one of nature’s most precious survivors.
