The IDC Staff Instructor course at Scuba Center Asia is a significant milestone in your diving career, perhaps more so than ever before. It’s a chance to step into the shoes of the instructors you once admired.
Those aspirations of becoming a dive professional and immersing yourself in the industry you love can finally materialize after completing this course.
As an IDC Staff Instructor, you’ll dive deep into scuba diving knowledge and learn how to train new PADI Instructors at a Course Director level.
You’ll work alongside our PADI Course Director and Master Instructor during a typical IDC, getting hands-on experience.
They’ll teach you how to lead candidate counseling sessions, elevate teaching techniques both above and below the water, and become a dive mentor.
Basically, you’ll have the chance to coach the next wave of dive educators during the PADI IDC.
Before the IDC Starts
A few days prior to the program, you’ll meet one-on-one with our Course Director for a focused orientation (online) session covering:
- IDC structure, standards & procedures
- Curriculum flow andd teaching philosophy
- In-depth Assistant Instructor training approach
- Psychology of evaluationa andd candidate counseling
- Review of dive theory and standards knowledge
This session can be done face to face or online, or even a mix of bots and sets the foundation for your leadership role during the IDC Staff Instructor course.
Week 1 | IDC Staff Instructor Course | Demonstration & Performance Phase
You’ll be introduced as a core member of the Scuba Center Asia IDC team, not a participant. From day one, you step into the role of mentor, demonstrating professional-level instruction in real time while supporting Instructor Candidates throughout their development.
This phase is designed to finetune your leadership skills, your evaluation abilities, and expand your confidence as a dive professional. Because this first week runs alongside the full IDC program, you’ll be learning, coaching, and growing together with the candidates, exactly how real Instructor Development works in the professional world.
During this phase, you will also:
- Demonstrate Knowledge Development presentation
- Demonstrate a confined water teaching presentation
- Demonstrate an open water teaching presentation
- Be evaluatedd on these presesentations
- Complete a theory and standard exam
- Deliver your first IDC-level teaching presentation
- Learn and practise in realtime how to confidently work with your Course Director manual.
Week 2 & Beyond | IDC Staff Instructor Course | Coaching & Evaluation Skills
Once the IDC at Scuba Center Asia is underway, your focus shifts toward leadership and mentoring. This is where you grow from experienced instructor into educator of instructors.
You’ll work closely with the Course Director learning how to:
- Evaluate candidates professionally and fairly
- Provide constructive coaching and feedback
- Guide candidates through improvement strategies
- Develop your own instructional leadership style

Opportunities as a PADI IDC Staff Instructor
- Independently teach and certify PADI Assistant Instructors

- Evaluate, provide counseling, and offer remedial training for instructor candidates during IDCs
